WE GOT THEM

Three members of a gang involved in the daring theft of dhs15 million of jewellery during a raid on a Wafi City store have been arrested.Police confirmed one of the suspects was being held by detectives in Europe and was awaiting extradition to the UAE to stand trial. The jewellery was stolen during a raid on the mall on April 15 and has now been returned to its rightful owners at the Graff jewellery store.

“We got them and the jewellery has been returned to the real owners. From the third day after the crime we knew the details. We will not stop looking for anyone who tries to steal from us,” said Dahi Khalfan, head of Dubai police. The evening raid at Wafi City left shoppers stunned as the gang crashed two high-performance Audi cars through the entrance doors and into the front window of the shop. They stole the jewellery and left the scene in just 105 seconds. Police revealed yesterday that weapons used during the raid were really children’s plastic replicas of guns and that the gang had reconnoitered the Wafi City mall at least twice prior to their robbery. Following the raid, police announced that armed squads of police would patrol Dubai’s shopping malls. This would still happen despite the arrest of the three gang members, police said.Officers confirmed that those under arrest came from different European countries without identifying which ones. Khalfan said UAE police officers had been sent to Europe to hunt the gang immediately after the robbery. Previously, police said the gang had an international reputation and had been responsible for a spate of more than 130 robberies. It was revealed yesterday that one of the suspects was trailed and led officers to the stolen jewellery hidden in a car in Dubai. His job was to get the items out of the country, the police chief added. As well as arresting the three, police recovered 15 different passports, some of which belonged to dead people. “This was a massive hit for the gang. We will not allow this rabble to destroy our reputation,” Khalfan said. The hunt for others involved in the raid is continuing.
