Oh No...torturing cats with grooming seems to be contagious these days. I can't say I miss the fleas in the States. That's one of the benefits of having cats here. The downside; sporadic supplies of cat food and litter (in Al-Hassa).
I remember a few months ago there was a cat-litter famine of sorts and the entire EP seemed to be out of it! Even I combed the supermarkets in Dammam and couldn't find a bag! We drove around a bit to find building sites with clean sand deposits and took bagfuls to use as litter in the interim.
And cat food...every once and awhile when all the local supermarkets are out, I boil a chicken and shred it. I keep it in the fridge and feed kitty as needed. One chicken last about 3 days. At least it's better now, when I first came here I was lucky to find a box of crappy, yucky dry food! Now they have Whiskas and sometimes 9lives pouches.
SSW, it's so hot in Saudi even the fleas can't hack it?! We used to joke that it was so hot in Dubai that even the flies were slow moving (check them out compared to their N.American counterparts).
Well, the sand thing should always work, but better for you that the litter box is outside.
My husband, who did not like animals before he met Judy, feeds her 1 egg yoke in the morning (he has an egg white and partial egg yoke omlette each morning). She's like Pavlov's cat every time I take out the carton, now.
There are two places in the world where I had a terrible problem with fleas... Virginia and Cairo!!
And I didn't have a pet in either place. But in both places they would hitch rides on my long skirts or slacks just walking down the street (Egypt) or across a lawn (VA) and then I would be covered with bites for the month or so it would take to get rid of them in the house. And nowadays in the US, the flea sprays have been EPA'd down to the point where they are safe for humans and pets... and fleas thrive on it...
Strange how mosquitoes and fleas ignore some people while attacking other in clouds/swarms... even within the same room!!
Another reason to wear mini-skirts in Cairo, VS. ;-)
I had a problem with the mosquitos in Cairo. They would hang out (i.e. 'hide') under the desks during the night so when the students and I arrived in, they'd go for our ankles and any other lower bits that were exposed. I took to wearing repellent on my ankles and feet every day of the year.
I contemplated wearing a flea collar around each ankle... and even though I still have great legs, I was already too old for mini-skirts when I was in Cairo :-) ignoring the fact that they had not yet returned to fashion when I first lived there in the mid-80's.
My first class there was teaching the workers at a factory out near the pyramids... and the mosquitoes were ferocious with all the canals in that area!!
