I'd say probably the 1960's... which is practically pre-historical in Gulf terms. It comes from this photographer's Trucial Scouts thread. So the latest is maybe the 70's.
I love hearing the stories of the expats who lived there in the 70s...comical!
Especially the bit about no air conditioning!!
My first flight into Oman in '88, I sat next to an older Scotsman who had been with the Oman branch of the Scouts. He regaled me with tales of the Sultan taking the throne (he was part of the coup) and the regular battles with Yemen over the borders... that weren't settled until well into the 90's.
Then there was the American missionary doctor who from the l950's to '70's was the only doctor in Oman. He was given a retirement home (palace) by the Sultan and flown over to spend the winters till now assuming that he is still in good health. He regularly came to the SQU faculty club and gave talks and had old pictures. Lovely fascinating man...

lol...I recall meeting people one Christmas in Sharjah-expats who had been there for donkey's years. One guy must have been making 40,000 + dirhams/month in the oil industry when he started in the 80s, but was given a pay cut...Another married couple (both married to other people when they arrived in the UAE in the early 70s) talked about the men in abu dhabi fighting w/ the men in Dubai, forcing them to close the road between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
