Your "holly berries" are actually called Oregon grapes. They were new to me when I moved to Seattle and discovered them on the college campus I was attending, and near one of the P-Patch gardens in Eastlake. The leaves turn red part of the year, and I understand from a friend who knows the plant that the fruit is edible.
