*Sigh*

A friend and I visited Sri Lanka in early 2004. It was during the 2nd Eid break that we headed down there for 5 days. I was on Facebook tonight browsing the photos of a former Egyptian colleague of mine, and the title of her recent photo album was "Eid Holiday 2007." Though there were no photo titles that specifically indicated location, it looked very much like Sri Lanka.

Below you'll find a photo of me from that 2004 Sri Lanka trip at the Turtle Project in Bentota where every night at sunset several visitors to the area helped the Turtle Project staff release the newly-hatched turtles into the ocean. The other photo is one that I found in my former colleague's recent photo album.

That's so sad.

Reconstruction can be painstakingly slow in these poor countries. And, sadly for the turtles, the projects that benefit the people have to take priority. I don't know the location or the story at all, but I wonder if this turtle project lost some or all of its employees and volunteers?

Good question, VS. I don't believe Bentota was hit as hard as other parts of the Sri Lankan coastline. I've seen blogs about the turtle project since the tsunami, so I presume they have been reestablished.
