Last Arabic Class Tonight

This is the 2nd time I've taken Arabic 3 at the local community college. They don't go beyond level 3 at this point, and our instructor is only available to teach at certain times of the year. We've unofficially made the last class each term a day to eat, watching Arabic films and videos, listen to music, and generally ask questions that still linger. I've pulled out the big guns in previous 'last days', including basboosa and tabouleh "...just like you'd get in a restaurant," (Says my teacher. Maybe he means a 'crappy' restaurant, but I'll take the compliment). I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but you just can't show up w/ hummous anymore! The last party I went to, 5 people brought hummous. It's no longer that 'show-stopper' it once was in white America's living rooms. I was going to make tameya, the Egyptian version of falafel, for today's class. A general fear of frying things, coupled w/ the fact that I was going to be using canned beans (vs. dried beans that had been soaked), put me off the idea entirely. My husband assured me that it was be too sticky. Hence, the dishes you see before you: a corgette/zuchini dip, yoghurt and cucumber salad, and baba ghanough (with way too much tahini).

Now if we could only get some authentic baladi Egyptian bread to go with it... the stuff that is sold on the street corners...

VS: LOL-I asked hubby to get pitta bread at the store. I asked for 'white' (not what we normally eat) and he came home w/ 'wheat'. Blah. I like wheat bread, but not in this form!

Welcome back, Alpha! Long time, no see!!

I liked your recipes quite a bit!! Will you post one soon on how to make the middle eastern version of italian meatballs? I had some once in Iraq and have never been able to duplicate the ingredients. I thought you might be able to help.

You can really never have enough hummus and baba ganoush if you ask me!

Anon: Let me see if I can find a recipe for those meatballs! Thanks for the compliment!

Maryam: Welcome! I think you're right. Maybe I'm the one bored w/ bringing hummous. Usually, 3 other people bring it, so I decided against it. I arrived in class, and guess what? NO HUMMOUS! :)

Did you take the class in Seattle? Which community college offers Arabic? I'm looking for a class...

BCC offers classes, though there's only one instructor (in continuing ed, that is) and he doesn't teach during the summer or autumn terms. There should be ARabic 1 offered again in January. They also started offering it for credit hours, though I don't know who's teaching those classes. I heard Seattle Central also offers cont. ed classes for learning Arabic.
