Countdown to Departure

My husband's mother has had some health concerns that require surgery, so he'll head to Egypt on his own (tomorrow, sniff), since much of the trip will be him giving her comfort. I return to my original plan of visiting friends in Dubai (leaving in just over 2 weeks!!!). It's been almost 2 years since I visited last, and I miss them terribly. I miss the warm weather. I miss the pampered lifestyle. I miss going to the pool or the beach of Friday mornings, just for few hours. I miss the ability of friends to schedule coffee dates last minute-everyone here in the States doesn't dream of 'calling over' unexpectedly and coffee is something responsible people seem to plan a week in advance. I miss the FABULOUS dinner offers in Dubai. My mouth waters at the thought of "sushi night" at the Creekside Sheraton (all you can eat, and NOT limited to the cheaper stuff). I miss the plethora of Arabic restaurants, fantastic Iranian cuisine, and a slew of Thai, Japanese, and Asian fusion places. Don't forget the variety of Indian cuisines from cheap and cheerful to high end. I miss the general culture of ESL teachers, who plan annual trips to exotic places, despite the fact that they live somewhere that people already perceive as exotic. I miss the cultural clashes, and though Costco and Ikea here present a frustrating substitute for what daily life is in the UAE, I love the fact that so many cultures are represented, bringing the best and the worst with them to one country. I miss delivery. I miss paying someone else to iron my clothes! I miss getting dressed up for things-I feel a bit frumpy here most days. Ok, there are a lot of superficial items in the previous sentences, but it's just about the way of life. I liked being one of the few N. Americans in the UAE. I loved that most of my colleagues and friends came from all over the world: Ireland, UK, Oz, New Zealand, France, Belgium, Jordan, Egypt, India, Pakistan, Lebanon, etc....and here, I'm just one of many who are more of less the same. My biggest fear in returning to the US was boredom. My fear has been realised. Sigh.

May Allah give your mother-in-law a quick recovery, Insha'Allah.

Good luck on your trip and safe going and returning INsha'Allah. Have fun!

That's very sweet, Manal. She's 55 and not in great health. I do hope this all goes off without a hitch.

You know, I like the Burj, but it's not my favourite hotel there (worth visiting once you win the lottery). The Royal Mirage has such gorgeous architecture, the candle-lit walkways...pics are most definitely on their way!

Prayers for your mother-in-law - I'm sure that your husband's presence will help tremendously - 55 is still so young!!!

Oh girl you pulled me back into missing Dubai so much! Not many here - my family (parents) included - can possibly understand her seduction - just too unforgettable - the lifestyle, the slow-paced trickle of time...

ah yes - enjoy for me too!!!!

Thanks so much for the well-wishes, all! I think 55 is young, but my husband insists that we can't compare the lifestyles. I really hope this encourages her to change her eating and exercise habits for the better. Hoping hubby can convey that while he's there. :-(

Lisa, I was going to link your flickr album, with your permission, since you've got some fabulous photos from Dubai! I know that Dubai is materialistic and shallow to some, but I have some wonderful friends there who hardly fit the mold. I'll take loads of pics and let you know when I've posted them, Lisa.

Gautam: check your email. Response on the way-I'll leave you a few numbers to reach me at while I'm there. we gotta meet up. Sue is coming from Oman, so we'll coordinate!

I have seen the most incredible pictures of the inside of that fancy hotel. Isn't there a indoor ski place close to this as well. I would love to visit, but in the meantime, will live vicariously through you. So take lots of pictures and have a great time!
Hope your mother in law has a speedy recovery!

That indoor ski resort is in the Mall of the Emirates. Pictures will follow once I'm there, for sure. Thanks for your well-wishes, Tamara!!

Best wishes to your mother-in-law, not to mention, I can understand how you feel since you've lived this 'exotic' life, that most Americans dream about, and you come back to the states. I enjoy going to your blog, because your experiences and thinking is so diverse and borrows from many cultures, it's truly a great gift you have lived a life like that, and im glad i can hear about it from ya.
