When I hear this song, it reminds me of an optimism that I don't think this nation possesses any longer. We aren't motivated to make social changes. We're more worried about how much it costs to fuel up our 4 x 4s than fixing what's wrong in our country. We care more about stopping abortion and gay marriage, than we do about making sure no one goes hungry (in the wealthiest nation on the earth). We're so busy meddling in the affairs of other nations (who have resources of interest to us) that we've neglected our own people (take a look at New Orleans today), and abandoned those around the world that just need the very essentials for survival (but have nothing to offer us in return). Nope...no optimism left here.

My optimism died a long time ago...
Honestly, Cairo, all of these issues that you speak of, all the people making these decisions relate to either being: a politician, wealthy, white, or a corporate exec. Since, it seems like these are the peoples making these decisions that turn their backs on the real issues and who further their own interests.
No, I haven't felt optimism in a long time because after 9-11 I felt American, but after Katrina, I felt Black again.
sigh.....
